Messages aren't encrypted
What that means, and what not to write there.
Friym says it plainly: the "Unencrypted" label is visible on the conversation, and the input field reads "Unencrypted message…".
What it means in practice
You need to separate two moments in a message's life, because the protection isn't the same.
While it travels, your message is encrypted. Between your phone and Friym's servers, it moves through an encrypted channel. Someone listening to the network — a public wifi, say — would read nothing.
Once it arrives, it's stored in the clear. That's what the "Unencrypted" label is about: Friym keeps your conversations in a form that is technically readable on the server side. There's no end-to-end encryption, the kind that would make your messages unreadable even to Friym.
That isn't a flaw, it's the current state of the product — and end-to-end encryption isn't planned at this stage. Friym would rather show it in two places on screen than let you assume otherwise.
So the practical consequence isn't "someone is reading your messages", but "don't trust this inbox with anything that must exist nowhere in the clear".
Don't write there what nobody else should read
Recovery codes, the code you received by email, ID documents, full bank details: Friym messaging isn't the place.
What Friym will never ask you
No member of the Friym team will ever ask you, by message, for your 6-digit code, a recovery code, or to approve a payment outside the app. Anyone doing so is trying to take your account: report them.
