Sending a message

Opening a conversation and understanding a message's states.

The person's profile → the "Message" button

You don't message someone from the Messages tab

The Messages tab shows conversations that are already open — it has no "new message" button. To write to someone for the first time, you go to their profile and tap "Message".

The search bar inside the Messages tab only searches your own conversations.

The Messages tab carries two tabs at the top: "Chats" and "Requests". See Message requests.

A message's states

Under each message you send, a word says where it has got to.

LabelWhat it means
Sending…It's on its way
SentIt has left your phone
DeliveredIt has arrived
SeenIt has been read
FailedIt didn't go out

The screen also shows "Typing…" when the other person is writing.

With no network, nothing is lost

The message is queued

A message written without a connection isn't lost: it's kept and goes out on its own when the network returns. You don't have to rewrite it.

If the input field has disappeared

Three possible reasons, and each is explained on screen:

A sent message can't be taken back

There is no deleting and no editing of a message already sent. No recovery gesture exists in the app: what's sent is sent.

On a page, the inbox is shared

A page's whole team reads the same inbox, and unread messages are counted for the page, not for each member. A message already opened by somebody else won't show as unread for you.
